MELUSINE

MELUSINE : effluent management in the electric plant

The joint laboratory MELUSINE (Maîtrise des Effluents dans L'USINe Électrique) was born out of the joint research team formed in 2018 by EDF R&D and LRGP. Since its creation, MELUSINE has been dedicated to the study, design and optimization of processes applied to the treatment of fluids in industrial environments, focusing particularly on the development of membrane technologies to meet environmental challenges, the decarbonization of industry and the design of power plants of the future.

MELUSINE 2

Renewed in 2022 for a five-year period, the second phase of the project, MELUSINE 2, extends the scope of its research to decarbonated production, covering water and gas treatment, and the recycling of chemicals and pure water, again with a view to reducing by a factor of ten the energy consumed by power plant effluent treatment processes.

The aim of the joint research team is twofold:

Demonstrate feasibility experimentally, by successively incrementing TRLs

  • Laboratory proof-of-concept (TRL 3-4 validation) and study of limiting physico-chemical phenomena
  • Design or consolidate the process on a laboratory pilot (TRL 5-6)
  • Test the process under real conditions with a piloted / prototypical plant unit (TRL 7)

Develop simulation, design and evaluation tools at different scales

  • Develop unit operation models that can be integrated into existing process simulation tools.
  • Develop and use systematic process design methods, capable of proposing optimal equipment layouts, which comes under the heading of Process System Engineering (PSE).
  • Provide industrially relevant evaluation functions, integrating different constraints

The joint laboratory is planning its first real-life test in 2025, marking a crucial stage in the practical application of these innovations.
